Wildlife at
`Pant-y-Bugail`.
We are blessed with a wealth of wildlife at `Pant-y-Bugail` and `Crow`s Nest
Cottage`. One guest recently saw a fox running across the field behind the
cottage, with three cubs trying to keep up; another guest had difficulty
driving down the lane as a fox was running in front of the car. On another
occasion, a colleague of Bill Odie was puzzled about some noises coming from
the lane wall; he was able to identify them as baby weasles.
Rabbits abound the locality and these attract birds of prey; Sparrow hawks,
Kestrels and Buzzards in the main. We have two families of Buzzards nesting in
the fields close by; they are magnificent birds and closely resemble Eagles,
with their massive wingspans and yellow beaks. Sadly, they eat smaller birds
and crows often dive-bomb them. Red Kites, with their v-shaped tails have
occasionally been seen here also; a rare sight.
We have been successful in attracting smaller birds here by putting up bird
feeders and we already have a lot of small birds nesting here in our nesting
boxes- wrens and blue tits esp. One Wren nested in an old roll of masking tape!
We also have Greenfinches, Chaffinches, Great- Spotted Woodpeckers, Robins, the
list goes on. We are very fortunate to have visitors which nest in an old out
building here-Swallows. These birds usually arrive on the 12th of April each
year, without fail and are a delight to watch as they catch insects on the
wing and they like to swoop low on the field behind the cottage.
On this island, not far away, is the `Sea zoo`, which is a lovely sea aquarium
at Brynsiecyn- there are Rays, Bass, Sea Bream etc. but the children’s
favourites are the lobsters [with elastic bands on their claws so they can't be
picked -up] `Pili-Palace` is brilliant for it's exotic and tropical butterflies
and small zoo animals; if you want a big zoo, then Colwyn Bay Welsh Mountain
Zoo is the place to go. Beaumaris is great for sight seeing trips to
